Zoopedia Description

General[]

Population In The Wild: 10,000

The clouded leopard is a medium-sized arboreal cat that lives in the forests and grasslands of South East Asia. It has yellow to grey fur that is covered in large black reticulated rings. Their head, legs, and tail are covered in black spots and stripes. Clouded leopards weigh between 11kg and 23kg.

The clouded leopard is a vulnerable species; its population is largely fragmented across its range due to habitat destruction by deforestation. This reduces the amount of habitat and prey that the leopards have access to and also decreases their choice of mates. They are poached for their skins and body parts that are used in traditional medicine. It is illegal to hunt clouded leopards and they are protected across its range. The leopards are being researched to better understand how they mate and reproduce, and there are many facilities that have entered into breeding programs in order to conserve the clouded leopard.

Social[]

Clouded leopards are solitary and live alone except for when mothers are with their cubs

Reproduction[]

The mating habits of clouded leopards in the wild are unkrown due to the secretive nature of the animal, althought it has been observed in captivity. Males can detect whether a female is in oestrus throught the scent of her urine. Males and females may mate several times while the female is receptive. Males can be aggresive towards females during mating, biting the backs of their necks and often causing harm, or in some cases, death. If the mating succesful females will be pregnant for 85-100 days and give birth to 1-5 cubs (3 on average). The cubs will start eating solid food at 2 months old, and their mother will start teaching them to hunt during this age. They will be fully weaned between 4-6 months, and remain with their mother for around 10 months before leaving the litter. Clouded leopards reach sexual maturity between 20 to 30 months
